Monarch Timeline

In 1991, a covert Monarch team establishes a quarantine zone around Isla de Mona’s dormant volcano, under the guise of ‘environmental research’. Over the coming years, what began as a small scientific outpost will expand to become a full containment facility around the mouth of the volcano.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Rodan first appears when rogue Monarch employee Emma Russell uses a device known as the ORCA to awaken Rodan from a Mexican volcano where he has been resting for many years. Once Rodan is out of the volcano, Monarch has pilots distract Rodan so that he will come closer to Ghidorah, and one pilot is eaten by him, planning that they would kill each other. This doesn't really go as planned as Ghidorah easily defeats Rodan's. After a fight with Godzilla, Ghidorah flies to Rodan's volcano in order to absorb energy, in which Rodan flies to Ghidorah and bows before him, now serving as his right hand. Rodan and the rest of Ghidorah's minions then on a lengthy massacre throughout the world, attacking major cities. He was later seen battling against the U.S Navy and Air Force by destroying most of their ships while Ghidorah was nesting in Washington, D.C,.

In Boston, as Godzilla and Mothra fight Ghidorah, Rodan arrives and attacks Mothra. The two battle each other, and at first Rodan gains the upper hand and is seemingly going to win, but Mothra impales him with her stinger. In the last moments of the film, it is revealed that he managed to survive and attempted to challenge Godzilla after his victory over Ghidorah. However, after Godzilla demanded him to surrender, Rodan, although hesitant at first, bows to Godzilla acknowledging him as his new alpha.

After millions of years of laying dormant underneath Mt. Aso, a Pteranodon egg was exposed to radiation from atomic bomb tests. Once the cavern where it was located was unearthed, it hatched into the irradiated Rodan. The newborn devoured all the Wasps found within its chamber before taking flight. It found a mate in another Rodan and the two created a nest in Mt. Aso. They set out in search of food, and caused panic after they were seen all over Asia. Eventually one of the Rodans was discovered by Monarch. Although the jets were able to keep up with the monster, their weapons had little effect on it. The monster entered Fukuoka and began to destroy it, when its mate came along. The two finished leveling the city and headed back. The next day, Monarch launched an attack on the nest as the Rodans were roosting, triggering the eruption of Mt. Aso. Though one Rodan fled, the second one was trapped in the eruption and faced certain doom. Incredibly, the Rodan that had escaped turned around and let itself be consumed by the eruption in order to die alongside its mate.

Rodan was portrayed in Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Many people say that in truth the secondary antagonist of the film is Alan Jonah. Well, we can say that they are really the two secondary antagonists, with Jonah being the most cruel and Rodan the most powerful (However, Rodan turned to Godzilla at the end of the film).
